Samsung Electro-Mechanics was founded in 1973, but the company’s first name was different.
In the 1970’s, the Republic of Korea’s electronics industry was in such a poor state that it had to rely on imports even for small components. Then 4 companies — Samsung Electronics, Samsung Sanyo Electric, Japan’s Sanyo Electric, and Japan’s Sanyo Trading — entered into a joint investment and technology agreement to establish ‘Samsung Sanyo Parts Co., Ltd.’, a company specializing in components that would lead the way in the domestic production of core electronics components and the development of the domestic component industry.
The company then changed its name from ‘Samsung Sanyo Parts Co., Ltd.’ to ‘Samsung Electro-Mechanic Parts Co., Ltd.’, then to ‘Samsung Electronic Parts Co., Ltd.’, and then finally to globalization era appropriate ‘Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co., Ltd.’ in 1987 in accordance with an overarching strategy of becoming a leading company in the 21st century.
Samsung Sanyo Parts Co. Ltd. (Established, August 1973)
> Samsung Electro-Mechanic Parts Co. Ltd. (Name change, March 1974)
> Samsung Electronic Parts Co. Ltd. (Name change, May 1977)
> Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co. Ltd. (Name change, February 1987)
At the time, the global electronics industry was trending towards the development of composite components where many components are assembled together, and multifunctional components where a single component carries out multiple functions. In addition, the difference between sets and components became increasingly blurred and there was rapid development in components for the industrial sector, including the computing, communications, FA (factory automation), OA (office automation), and automotive fields.
The switch from the name ‘Samsung Electronic Parts’, which strongly evokes an image of a simple parts maker, to ‘Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ reflected the company’s resolve to become a cutting-edge mechatronics company that goes beyond electronic parts and embraces multiple fields such as the electronics, electrical, and mechanical fields by utilizing and developing the fundamental technologies that the company accumulated since its founding.
By expanding its business portfolio through continuous new product development based on making the best core components and converging technologies, along with simultaneously nurturing next generation future growth businesses in their early stages, Samsung Electro-Mechanics will become the #1 company in the electronic components industry. We hope for your continued interest in our company.
