Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced that it has been operating an official in-house university program in partnership with Sungkyunkwan University to nurture “materials and components” technology talent, and produced its first graduates on February 21.

The in-house university operated by Samsung Electro-Mechanics is the Department of Material-Component Convergence Engineering (MCCE) at Sungkyunkwan University, which was established in 2022. Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ in-house university consists of a university education curriculum that integrates electrical and electronic engineering, advanced materials, mechanical engineering, and chemical engineering fields with a customized curriculum specialized for Samsung Electro-Mechanics. It is a regular bachelor’s degree program approved by the Ministry of Education. Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ students take 8 semesters of classes over 3 years, and upon completing more than 130 credit points and graduating, they receive an official bachelor’s degree diploma in the name of the President of Sungkyunkwan University.

Any employee of Samsung Electro-Mechanics who has worked for more than 3 years and has a high school diploma or associate degree can apply for the in-house university. Twenty students are selected each year through document screening, written tests, and interviews. The program attracts high interest from employees, with a competition ratio exceeding 6:1 every year and some applicants even reapplying after previous attempts.

Students selected for Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ in-house university program, MCCE at Sungkyunkwan University, receive special treatment. To bridge the academic gap for high school and community college graduates, Samsung Electro-Mechanics provides pre-admission support including online lectures in calculus and basic physics, as well as inviting external expert instructors. During the semester, the company implements an “employee talent donation mentoring” system. Employees who graduated from top engineering schools and possess specialized knowledge in relevant fields operate a program to assist MCCE students with their studies.

Students in Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ in-house university program are allowed to focus on their studies by attending school classes three days a week without coming to the company. They receive 80% of their tuition fees, textbook expenses, and are provided with separate study rooms to enhance learning efficiency.

As this program realizes their long-held dream of learning, Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ employee-students have shown exceptional academic enthusiasm. Professor Yoo Kwanho, the head of the MCCE department at Sungkyunkwan University, praised them, saying, “There were concerns that MCCE students might fall behind in classes due to their academic gap. However, they participate in classes very passionately and actively, and by applying experiences learned through their company work to their studies, they are actually providing positive motivation to other students as well.”

For example, Samsung Electro-Mechanics students are consistently selected for the Dean’s List, which is awarded to the top 10% of students with a GPA of 4.3 or higher at Sungkyunkwan University’s College of Information and Communication Engineering. They have also presented their graduation project research results at domestic specialized academic conferences.

※ Samsung Electro-Mechanics Pro Cheon Hyejun presented his graduation project research results on “A Study on the Focal Efficiency According to the Imperfection of Meta-surface Lenses” at the ‘Photonics Conference’, a domestic specialized optical academic conference.

The 20 students who enrolled in 2022 and are now graduating with engineering degrees will be assigned to development and technical departments in each business unit where their practical experience before admission and the materials and components theory learned through the undergraduate program can be most effectively utilized. The 4th batch of students, Class of 2025, who were selected last year, are scheduled to enroll on February 26.

Park Bongsoo, Executive Vice President and Head of the People Team at Samsung Electro-Mechanics, stated, “When employees broaden their perspectives and enhance their expertise, it ultimately improves the company’s competitiveness. Samsung Electro-Mechanics will continue to pursue talent development to strengthen technological competitiveness in manufacturing sites.”

Samsung Electro-Mechanics operates various development programs for domestic and international employees to improve leadership skills by rank and career, job expertise, foreign language proficiency, and global competencies.
